  • Endosymbiosis
  • Rough ER
  • Golgi ApparatusRight answer
  • Mitochondria
From Unit 2: Cell Structure and Function (part 1), 15 questions.

What Unit 2 covers

Unit 2 moves from molecules to the cell: what each organelle does and how the endomembrane system works as one (rough ER to Golgi to vesicle), why cells stay small (the surface area to volume ratio), and the fluid mosaic membrane, with what crosses it by diffusion, facilitated diffusion and active transport, and what goes in and out by endocytosis and exocytosis. It ends with tonicity, water potential, compartmentalization and the endosymbiotic origin of mitochondria and chloroplasts.

Where students slip

  • Hypertonic and hypotonic compare one solution with another. Students attach the word to the wrong side, and then send the water the wrong way.
  • As a cell grows, its volume grows faster than its surface area, so the surface area to volume ratio falls.
  • Water moves from higher to lower water potential, and adding solute lowers water potential.
  • Prokaryotes do have ribosomes. What they lack is a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles.

The sets

Play this set opens the set in splycr, where you can read every question and host it for your class straight away. Hosting needs no account, and students join with the code on the board. A free account lets you copy a set and edit it.

The questions come from the Biology by Bradford flashcard bank, written by an IB and AP Biology teacher. Each one plays as multiple choice, and the wrong options are other answers from the same set.

Game modes that suit this unit

Every set plays in all eight modes. These two fit this unit best.

  • Racer in teams

In team Racer each teammate sees different options and only one has the right answer, so the team has to talk. Organelles and transport suit this: someone has to explain why it is the rough ER and not the Golgi before anyone taps.

  • Kaboom

The answers in these sets are short (an organelle, a kind of transport, a word like hypotonic), so the bomb moves fast and every student answers many times. Nobody is knocked out: the holder just loses points when it goes off.
